🎻 Bringing Music to Those Who Need It Most: How YST Students Use Performance to Uplift the Community

At Singapore’s Yong Siew Toh (YST) Conservatory of Music, musical excellence is paired with a deep commitment to empathy. Through its Community Engagement and Wellness programme, YST students have been extending their talents beyond the concert stage — bringing music to places like nursing homes, hospitals, and community centres.
These intimate performances often look nothing like formal recitals. Instead of concert halls, students play in day rooms and open spaces, where audiences include seniors in wheelchairs, healthcare workers on break, or children recovering from illness. Yet, despite the change in setting, the power of performance feels just as — if not more — profound.
As described by student musician Wei Lin in a published YST feature, playing a piece like Clair de Lune for an elderly woman who quietly cried during the performance left a lasting impact.
“I don’t think it was the song — I think it was the gesture,”
These outreach efforts are less about artistic perfection and more about emotional connection. Students often tailor their repertoires to suit the audiences — choosing nostalgic classics, familiar folk tunes, or melodies that might awaken long-dormant memories.
In one case, a senior living with dementia began humming along to a tune she hadn’t heard in decades. For the caregivers present, it was a small but meaningful moment — a reminder that music can reach where words and routine care sometimes cannot.
While the impact on the audience is visible, the effect on the musicians is equally transformative. As the programme continues to grow, many students come away with a renewed sense of purpose — realising that music can do more than entertain; it can soothe, spark memory, and remind people that they are seen.
One reflection from a participating student captures this perfectly:
“Even if they don’t remember my name, I know they remember the feeling.”

You don’t have to be a conservatory student to share music meaningfully. Here are a few simple ways to turn music into connection:
🎹 Play a calming song for a grandparent or parent — even over a call.
✍️ Create a playlist of feel-good songs for someone going through a tough time.
🎙️ Ask a loved one what their favourite song is — then learn it and play it back for them! The gesture speaks louder than words.
Small actions can leave a big impact — especially when shared with care.
