“touch…”— and we’d poke each other every time that line came on.

Some songs stay with us not because they trend or top the charts, but because they soundtrack a memory. For Jennelle and her mom, “Just Another Woman in Love” isn’t just an oldie. It was a nightly ritual. A shared joke.

And now, a tribute.

Growing up, Jennelle and her mom had a sweet tradition called “Mommy Time.” It wasn’t elaborate — just both of them in bed, a phone screen lit up with karaoke lyrics, and voices singing along to everything from ballads to 80s classics.

One of their favourites was “Just Another Woman in Love” by Anne Murray — an old tune her mom had introduced.

“Every time the lyrics said, ‘You touch me,’ we’d poke each other and try to move away first. We even did it randomly around the house. It was our thing.”

When the opportunity came for Jennelle to dedicate a song as part of The Giving Tunes, the first thing she thought of was home.

When she began performing the song, nerves kicked in — but something shifted when she noticed her mom starting to tear up.

“I got emotional too. I realised… I really missed this.”

No words needed. Just a look — and the same familiar poke.

Later, Jennelle handed over a handwritten card filled with quiet gratitude and unspoken thanks.

For Jennelle, music — especially karaoke — has always been a bridge. It’s part of her Filipino heritage. Part of her childhood. And most of all, part of her relationship with her mom.

“Karaoke is everything. Friends, family — it’s how we bond.”
